The American Psychiatric Association (APA), founded in 1844, is a medical specialty society of psychiatric physicians, with the mission of ensuring compassionate and effective treatment for all patients. It participates in public outreach to dispel myths about psychiatry as well as providing continuing education, support, and advocacy for its more than 35,000 members. The annual meeting of the American Psychiatric Association are held every year in May, and the 2014 meetings featured panels and keynote speeches from Nobel-Prize winning mental health experts as well as great speakers like Alan Alda and Vice President Joe Biden.
